Spot the New Mural

This week, artist Teresa Parod revealed a new colorful mural alongside the Lafitte Greenway. Inspired by the vibrancy and nature of New Orleans, the mural features friendly animals and blooming flowers with the Mississippi River running through the background. The piece is located alongside the Lafitte Greenway, stretching 220 feet along the fence facade of Bizou Wines and Cellar at 2500 St. Louis Street.

We want to continue bringing murals and public art to the Greenway this year. Visit lafittegreenway.org/art to see more public art on and along the trail.

Thank You Volunteers!

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who came out for the last two Saturdays to pick up trash and take out invasives along the Greenway.

On May 16th, in partnership with the Pontchartrain Conservancy's 2021 Storm Sweep, we picked up food wrappings, plastic bottles and even a tire from our bioswales, leaving our natural spaces clean and healthy.

On May 22nd, with volunteers from Immanuel Community Church, we put our new loppers and saws to work. removing more than 100 invasive tallow trees from our meadows and bioswales.

Have a volunteer project you want to work on with the Greenway? Want to get more updates about possible volunteer opportunities? Email Miguel at [email protected]

Greenway Guests: Val Massimi, Local Gardener

Val has been tending to the raised garden beds in front of the Sojourner Truth Neighborhood Center, growing healthy vegetables of all kinds and colors.

Val has established vegetable and native gardens at Homer Plessy Community School and the NOLA Nature School. She likes the Sojourner Truth site because, "its proximity to a native rewilding site means that there are plenty of pollinators like bees nearby." She also likes having the playground for her kids to enjoy close by while she is in the garden.

"Growing food together is such a wonderful way to build community and tune in to the environment," Val says. "Everybody eats, and in New Orleans we have a year round growing season! Right now we have carrots, green beans, okra, tomato’s, collards, peppers and herbs like basil and dill. There’s a lot of good eating you can do with that!"

Come by and see the garden any day outside our Greenway office!

If you are interested in participating at the garden, email Val at [email protected] or Miguel at [email protected]
