With the onset of fall and more forgiving temperatures, Friends of Lafitte Greenway is ramping back up our garden programming! Last weekend we started a new cycle of our Family Gardening Classes with community partners SPROUT NOLA, Raiz Teaching Garden and the ReFresh Community Farm on Broad Street.
These family classes are to encourage our neighbors to come out and get excited about growing our own food by introducing the basics of backyard gardening, focusing on gardening skills and local knowledge of crop seasonality.
Last weekend our 10 kiddos learned good gardening etiquette, started their own fall plots (we’re looking forward to carrots, brussels sprouts, arugula and kale in the next few months!), and discovered the importance of sustainable gardening for our food and environment. We had so much fun painting, planting, exploring, and tasting some pickled okra and bell peppers!
These classes are for community members of all ages and skill levels, to showcase how easy and rewarding growing your own food can be! Come out to our next class, on Saturday October 15 at the ReFresh Community Farm (on the Conti St. side of 300 N Broad) and see for yourself! See you in the garden! RSVP here.
3rd Saturday of every month, 9:00-10:30am
Upcoming Class Dates:
October 15th
November 19th
December 17th
