Tree of Life Mural Trailside at Massey’s

A new tree is springing to life on the Greenway this week, but this one is made of brick and paint. Mural artist, Rick Sinnett, is “planting” the multicolored piece, entitled “The Tree of Life” on the wall of Massey’s Outfitters at N. Carrollton Ave. Sinnett’s piece brings color, energy, and beauty to the trail.

This artwork is an interactive component of the Walk / Bike / Places Conference  that came to New Orleans this week. It was made possible thanks to generous support from the Project for Public Spaces, Massey’s Outfitters, and Rick Sinnett.

Hip Hop Kickboxing

This fall, we’ve been piloting a new cardio series on the Greenway! Join us and NDO Energy for all-levels, high-energy, non-contact hip hop kickboxing on Wednesday nights from 6-7pm from  until October 10th. We’ll be in the same location as our yoga series - on the Greenway between N Prieur and N Galvez, approx. 2101 St. Louis St. (Next to the new playground!). Bring a water bottle, a towel and a friend, and come ready to sweat!

Connect the Crescent Project: Greenway Downtown Connection Demo

Have you biked our Big Easy streets?

This month, we worked in partnership with Bike Easy, the City of New Orleans, and dozens of community partners to create Connect the Crescent - a connected, protected bikeway network at the heart of the city. The project included an installation that improves the connection between the Greenway’s Basin St. trailhead and the French Quarter. Volunteers spent a full day painting protected bike lanes, a contraflow lane, and crosswalks and posting signs. The Connect the Crescent network demonstration ‘pop-up’ will be in place for three months. With over 3.5 miles of protected bikeways installed and improved access and comfort at transit connections, the demonstration shows how our streets can safely and equitably accommodate everyone. Visit a bike lane near you!

Welcoming Jazmin Castillo

This month, Jazmin Castillo joined the Greenway team as an AmeriCorps Community Outreach Associate. She comes to us with a bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Louisiana State University. A Honduran native, Jazmin can communicate fluently in Spanish and hopes to connect more Latinos to the Greenway. She strives to learn about the community engagement process and to use her design knowledge to intersect ideals of social and environmental equity to create a more inclusive built environment. For her final Senior project at LSU, she assessed the needs of a segregated and disinvested neighborhood in Baton Rouge to propose a design that turned a decommissioned golf course into a community Urban Agriculture food park. We’re thrilled to have her join the team supporting our planning & design committee, community engagement and outreach, and volunteer activities.  Welcome to the team, Jazmin!
