Bald Cypress

Taxodium distichum

TREE PROFILE The Bald Cypress is a water-loving tree that thrives in river bottoms, lake shores, swamps, and the saturated Greenway bioswales. Louisiana designated the Bald Cypress the official state tree in 1963. It gets its name from its fine-textured needles that turn a spectacular russet-red color in the fall before falling off in the winter. Drinking up to 1,000 gallons of stormwater per day, the Bald Cypress is a great stormwater management feature on the Greenway.

WHERE TO FIND THIS TREE Spot these Cypresses trailside between N. Broad St. and S. Jeff Davis Pkwy.
